CHAPTER EIGHT

BRIGIT RETURNED FIFTEEN minutes later.

Holding the neck of an opened bottle of merlot in one hand and the stems of a pair of wine goblets in the other. Her movements were deft, economical and sexy despite that.

A sigh whispered out before he could prevent it, and the smile he sent her was genuine. He’d meant what he’d said about needing her. But at that moment, it wasn’t Brigit’s frankness he was admiring.

“Louise is at the reception desk, in case you were wondering,” she said.

Kellen mentally shifted gears. “Louise?” he asked, trying to picture the employee in question. He’d met most of the staff over the past few weeks, but only in passing. That would have to change, of course. He needed to know who was responsible for what.

Birgit was saying, “She works in housekeeping, but I’ve been training her to work the desk. She’s young, but capable. And she knows where to find me if anything comes up that she can’t handle on her own.” Merlot poured, she set the bottle aside and slipped into her seat. “Thank you, by the way.”

“For?”

“The wine. Although, now that I think about it, I should have picked one of the pricier labels. We stock a couple vintages that I can’t afford on my salary.”

“Maybe you’re due a raise then.”

“Maybe I am.” She sent him a sideways smile as she lifted her glass and tapped it against his.

After the quasi toast, they both took a sip.

“This is good,” he said, turning the bottle so he could read the label. His brows shot up in surprise. “Medallion Winery?”

“It’s a vineyard in Northern Michigan,” she said.

“Yes, I’ve heard of it. I met the owner, Zack Holland, a couple of years ago when I accepted a friend’s invitation to ski the slopes in Aspen for a couple weeks. He was on vacation with his new wife, Jane. No, Jaye. Very outspoken woman.” He smiled. “You remind me of her.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Brigit said.

“Good, because I intended it as one.” Kellen studied the contents of his glass. “They talked up their wine and some of the awards it had won, but I wasn’t expecting...”

“They had an excellent year in 2007. In fact, this vintage earned a couple of prestigious awards, which is why Sherry asked me to order a few cases to serve at the inn. According to her, it pairs well with her stuffed pork tenderloin.”

Kellen spared a glance at his forgotten meal and nodded thoughtfully before agreeing, “It does.”

They both took another sip.

“Are you a connoisseur?” he asked.

“I wouldn’t say that.” She wrinkled her nose and laughed. He liked the sound. “I just do a little research, even if I also rely on the experts when ordering for the inn. You probably know more about wine than I do.”

“Not really. I just know what I like.” He realized his gaze was on the woman rather than his wine, so he held up his glass and studied the deep red liquid in the waning light.
